Indoor badminton, anyone? Just because the weather is bad doesn't mean you can't play badminton. Try a fresh spin on this old game by trying your hand at balloon-badminton. All you need is a racket for each player, an inflated balloon (or two), and a little space.
Kids love balloon badminton inside during the off-season or in the swimming pool on a hot day:
- Create a net by tying a string across the room, either attached to two chairs or on either side of your swimming pool, depending on where you choose to play.
- Take turns serving, alternating between teams.
- Tossing the balloon in the air, each player attempts to swat it across the "net" to the other team.
- If the balloon hits the floor, or water, the opposing team gets a point. Play until one team or player reaches ten points to win the game.
Tick-tock, around the clock. This is a great game for a group of children to practice their game, and everyone gets a turn to stand in the middle of the "clock". The child in the center tosses the shuttlecock to each player standing around him or her in a wide circle with rackets; make sure there is ample room so that nobody gets hit with a racket! Working around the circle, each child will hit the shuttlecock back to the person in the center until each child has had a turn; switch to a new child in the center and repeat the clock-wise rotation.
Badminton dates back to the late 1800s in the United States, becoming a popular pastime in the 1930s enjoyed by players of all ages and skill levels.
